About AIWS

AIWS is an art project created by Lex Kartanė, a trans, autistic, and disabled artist, illustrator, and zine maker. Originally from Lithuania, Lex now resides in the vibrant city of Berlin, Germany, where they continue to explore and create.

Through their work, AIWS imagines new worlds and rules, much like the characters from stories and fairytales. The art of AIWS blends fantasy with reality, creating a unique fusion of visual storytelling that questions societal norms and embraces difference.

The core themes in Lex’s work include neurodiversity, disability, queerness, ableism, mental health, and animals, and the pieces often challenge existing stereotypes around these topics. With a strong emphasis on inclusivity and identity, their art serves as a form of personal expression and activism.

Lex’s creative journey began as a way to reclaim their voice and advocate for the representation of marginalized communities. Art became a tool for self-expression, healing, and building connections with others who share similar experiences. This commitment to advocacy remains central to their practice today.

Lex works primarily with watercolor, ink, and different printing techniques, often experimenting with various forms of illustration, painting, and zine-making. Their art is an ongoing exploration of intersectionality, self-discovery, and the power of storytelling.
